How to Create a Basic Flier

The first thing we will discuss is navigation in MS Word (not affiliated with N.A.)

When you look at your open word document, you will notice near the top you will see file, edit, view, insert, format, tools, table, window and help. This is called the toolbar. Another way to get good information is from the help files.

To bring up the help assistant press F1.

Below the toolbar you will notice pictures. These are called icons. This area here is called the icon bar. You can also add icons to your icon bar by clicking on tools, customize and click on the command tab. You can take these icon bars and place them on the edge of your page area also known as tool area.

There are easier ways to navigate not only in Word and/or Office Suite, and most Windows oriented programs. These are called hot keys. They are quicker than using your mouse to cut and paste. These hot keys are in most cases: ctrl and A, Z, X, C, V, B, I, U,

·  Ctrl + A = Select All

·  Ctrl + Z = Undo

·  Ctrl + X = Cut

·  Ctrl + C = Copy

·  Ctrl + V = Paste

·  Ctrl + B = Bold

·  Ctrl + I = Italic

·  Ctrl + U = Underline

There are other hot keys that are too numerous to mention. The best way to learn what they are is to look at the commands that you are clicking on. If it has an underlined area i.e. letter or number then either Alt or Ctrl will activate them.

First create a new document by clicking on file, new.

Click table, insert, table, adjust number of columns to 1, adjust number of rows to 5.

Highlight the table you just created and click on table, properties, select borders and shading, select none (which is on the left of the window) and click ok.

Your table should now look like this.

You are now ready to create your flier.

Tables give order to fliers which means by using invisible tables, you can place pictures and texts just the way you want them on your flier.

Other tools you can use to give better enhancement to your flier are done through right clicking on your table such as; insert table for better control on your flier. You can delete rows and split cells so you can have different areas of text in the same generalized location, as in the example below.

You can also add background and border colors to your cells. A cell is one square in a table.

In order to add pictures or other images, click on insert, picture, and you’ll have a wide variety of choices to pick from. If you’re wanting to insert an NA logo, you will want to click on, from file. Word art gives you formatted lettering, clip art is  usually stored in your "Word" directory.

The format drop down menu will help you with your paragraph spacing and layout.

Once you are satisfied with your flier layout you should save it as a .DOC by clicking on file / save as / a DOC.
There is no need to print the flier and then scan it before sending.  Sending it as a DOC will work perfectly.

You should then re-visit our website at www.naohio.org and send it to the webmaster.
The flier can then be
added to the functions pages.
